If You Have Experience In HR, Recruitment Or Event Management And Want A New Challenge, Please Read On…
The igaming sector has been going through spectacular growth in recent years as entrepreneurs and startups battle for market share against establish affiliates, operators and stock market listed companies. This growth and the corporate demands to be the best has put incredible pressure on businesses to recruit and retain the best staff possible. This has caused a very obvious skills shortage in Malta with many specialised and technical roles remaining unfilled for months. In turn, this has created a need for experienced recruiters – otherwise known as talent acquisition specialists – human resources staff and more generalised admin staff to keep offices running.
What HR jobs are there in igaming in Malta?
Any real business requires some level of human resources management to ensure legal compliance for both the staff and the business and to ensure that the rights of both are maintained properly.
Unless a business is very large, HR will likely be completed by between one and three people, whose titles will probably be Head of Human Resources, HR Manager and HR Coordinator. There are a range of specialised HR qualifications and it is to be expected that people doing these jobs will have some relevant training and experience.
Unlike many of the other roles in igaming where there is substantial turnover of staff, HR positions seem to be less volatile which means that HR staff are building the kind of long-term loyalty and experience in one company that we all think of when we think of the word “career”. Despite this, there are still a number of good vacancies that open each year that would be appealing to HR professionals.

What jobs are there for recruiters in igaming?
A large proportion of the open vacancies in igaming in Malta are filled by the small number of specialised recruitment firms in the sector. The rest are filled by in-house recruitment staff or senior managers and owners in smaller companies.
The igaming sector in Malta has a substantial skills shortage that seems to never be filled. From around 2014 or so there have been several large deals each year where a young and entreprenurial company has been purchased by stock market money. When this happens, there are several actions that happen. The first is that many of the staff will not like the new management and operational structure and will either resign or be forced to leave. The second is that the owners and managers that sold will now have a substantial amount of money and once their non-compete clauses have expired they will probably launch another business and recruit their most trusted and favourite staff. This creates vacancies and pressure on other companies who now face competition to retain their existing staff.
All of this means that there is a substantial turnover of staff in most Malta based igaming companies. A substantial staff turnover requires high quality recruiters to help fill these open positions. Some of these recruiters now describe themselves as talent acquisition managers. Their role is almost that of a headhunter, to scour relevant Facebook groups, LinkedIn and any other channels they can to identify people with suitable skills, experience and languages to be interviewed.
The recruitment agencies tend to have younger staff working for them. They are usually good at connecting with the lower level staff, such as customer service agents. However, as they get older and are able to fit in better at a higher level with management, they generally move to internal roles where they will receive a higher fixed salary and have better opportunities to advance themselves in a corporate heirarchy.
What Office Manager jobs are there in iGaming?
Virtually every company with a physical office in Malta will require an office manager to help them. There are a wide range of tasks and jobs that while not very important, need to be done. Many of these jobs are quite time consuming and labour intensive because of the general slow pace of Maltese administration.
Since there will be many tasks that require interaction with Maltese tradesmen, delivery staff or government civil servants, it is very helpful that an office manager is and speaks Maltese. There are some types of role in igaming that there are few suitable Maltese staff for – such as Norwegian speakers – and other positions – such as office managers – that only Maltese can fill.

What does an Event Manager do?
There are different types of igaming company in Malta. Once they reach a certain size, most businesses will employ some sort of event manager to either handle internal events, external events, or both.
Yes, you read that correctly. Many igaming companies in Malta hire event managers to arrange internal events for the company. The recruitment market is very tough for employers in Malta because they require not only specialised knowledge, such as product management or pay per click for example, but also because they require staff with a range of quite unusual languages. It is not unusual for companies to need to hire experienced Finnish copywriters for example. Just how many Finnish copywriters with experience of igaming can there be? It turns out that there really are not very many at all and most are not based in Malta.
This tough jobs market means that many companies hire a full time member of staff to organise parties and events to keep their staff entertained and mark them out as a business worth working for.
These event managers will also be responsible for arranging the annual company retreat. Many mid sized companies take all of their employees from around the world to an offsite location for a few days. There will be some work done, some training seminars to attend and colleagues from other countries to meet and get to know, but also lots of drinking, eating and partying too. igaming is part of the entertainment sector after all!
Other types of igaming business, such as the game providers, will often launch new games onto the market and throw launch parties. These types of event are also arranged by event managers, but will be much more business and sales orientated than an internal party.
Most companies will also attend the major industry events in Malta, London and Amsterdam, where they will have a corporate presence to meet new affiliates or do high level deals with other companies. The preparation for these events can take months and everything needs to be perfect.
