What are the requirements for developer jobs in igaming?
Almost all igaming companies operate in English internally. This means that there is a minimum requirement for all staff to speak and write English to a good level. As most of these businesses operate internationally, there is also a requirement for most of their staff to speak a second or third language to a good standard. Often, this means that members of staff are European nationals who speak their own mother tongue fluently, but also speak English. Some languages are in higher demand than others because of the markets that companies operate in. For example, speakers of Danish, Dutch, Finnish, German, Norwegian and Swedish are always in demand.
Applicants should have relevant qualifications in computer science and whatever specialisation they have.
iGaming companies are normally fast-moving and entrepreneurial which means that there is a premium to recruiting experienced staff. The companies do not normally want to train or educate technical staff, because there is so much work to do.
Obviously, previous experience is important, but most igaming firms specifically want to hire new staff with experience in the sector already. This can make it challenging to get your first job in igaming, but once you are in, there will be many other companies that would be willing to recruit you to their team.
The igaming sector is relatively small considering it’s global footprint. This means that at certain levels of companies, most people know most people. In an environment like this, referencing becomes much easier, which is another reason why recruiters look for igaming sector experience – they are more likely to get and keep their jobs.

What coding languages do igaming firms use?
The igaming sector can be divided into two technically – affiliates and operators.
Affiliates are marketing businesses that generate leads and pass the onto operators. Whenever a lead signs up and deposits, the affiliate company earns a fee. Most affiliate businesses in igaming focus their efforts on SEO as their acquisition channel. Typically, SEO companies build their websites in WordPress. There are exceptions to this, but they are rare. It means that to work in development for an affiliate, WordPress experience is vital.
Operators often use their own custom built systems and then integrate other platforms from other providers to fulfill certain tasks, such as payments, or the game providers. For this reason, web development jobs in operators require higher levels of skill and experience because they are more technically challenging.
What technical leadership jobs are in igaming?
Most companies have a CTO to lead their technical teams. This is usually a very demanding job that consists of many meetings each day, hundreds of emails, board meetings and lots of stress and responsibility. These jobs are normally recruited by the CEO via a headhunter and so will be very difficult to apply for.
Below the CTO will be several Heads of Department, for areas such as Development, Systems, UX and Security. Organisation and planning will normally be managed by Product Managers and Scrum Masters, depending on how the department is arranged. These are typically very busy jobs with significant amounts of stress and responsibility. As the igaming sector continues to innovate and develop, there is a constant requirement to deliver technical and development projects quickly and to a high standard.

What development jobs are there in igaming?
Teams of developers work together in igaming to design, deliver and test upgrades to the website and infrastructure. While leadership may have very specific requirements of their staff, their profiles often depend upon who can be hired at the time and has enough of the skills they need. For example, it is not easy to find experienced English speaking German full stack developers in Malta at short notice! This means that dev teams are often made up of guys (it is almost always guys) with a range of similar but different skills and experience, even if they appear to do the same thing.
If you have computer science qualifications and relevant development or engineering experience and also speak English (or English plus another language) then it is highly likely that there is a job for you in igaming in Malta. Please contact us with your details by filling in our application form.
How much do technical staff earn in igaming in Malta?
As described above, there is a very wide range of skills and experience that can be used to find a job in igaming. This means that salary levels can vary substantially as well.
At the very top end, we have heard of someone that earned €1m per year as CTO of one of the largest igaming firms – but he only lasted for one year in the job because the pressure and stress was too much for him. More realistically, a developer ought to expect to earn at least €40,000 per year, while those with great skills and experience can earn substantially more. A team leader might reasonably expect to earn between €50,000 and €60,000 per year.
